Overview

This drug is a combination therapy consisting of risperidone and sertraline. Risperidone is an antipsychotic medication that works by balancing dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and symptoms of autism. Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant that increases serotonergic activity by inhibiting serotonin reuptake at presynaptic neurons, used for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. The combination aims to leverage the antipsychotic effects of risperidone with the antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of sertraline. Clinical studies suggest that low-dose risperidone combined with sertraline may improve psychotic symptoms and psychosocial functioning more effectively than standard doses of risperidone alone in first-episode schizophrenia patients while reducing adverse effects. Additionally, this combination has shown efficacy in treating refractory OCD with improved safety profiles compared to traditional therapies. Mechanistically: - Risperidone acts as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. - Sertraline selectively inhibits serotonin reuptake transporters increasing synaptic serotonin concentration.
