Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the phenethylamine and piperidine classes. Ritalin LA is a specific extended-release formulation that utilizes Spheroidal Oral Drug Absorption System (SODAS) technology. This delivery system consists of a capsule containing two types of beads: 50% immediate-release beads and 50% delayed-release beads (enteric-coated). This bimodal release profile is designed to provide a rapid onset of action followed by a second peak approximately four hours later, effectively mimicking twice-daily dosing of immediate-release methylphenidate with a single morning administration. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine by blocking their respective transporters (DAT and NET) in the presynaptic neuron, thereby increasing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in pediatric and adult patients.
