Ritivixibat is an orally administered small molecule inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT), also known as the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT). By inhibiting IBAT, ritivixibat reduces the reabsorption of bile acids in the terminal ileum, leading to increased fecal excretion and a reduction in circulating bile acids. This mechanism is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in cholestatic liver diseases such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), Alagille syndrome, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Ritivixibat has also been explored for metabolic disorders including type 2 diabetes. The drug is currently under clinical development by Ipsen and was originally developed by Albireo Pharma[1][3][4][6].
