Overview

Rivaroxaban is an oral anticoagulant that acts as a direct, selective inhibitor of factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade. By inhibiting both free and bound factor Xa within the prothrombinase complex, rivaroxaban interrupts thrombin formation and prevents the development of blood clots. It does not inhibit thrombin (activated Factor II) or affect platelets. Rivaroxaban is used to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), reduce the risk of recurrent DVT/PE, prevent stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, provide thromboprophylaxis after hip or knee replacement surgery, lower cardiovascular event risk in patients with coronary artery disease or peripheral artery disease (often combined with aspirin), and for venous thromboembolism prevention/treatment in pediatric populations including those post-Fontan procedure for congenital heart disease. Rivaroxaban was developed by Bayer and is marketed under the brand name Xarelto[1][3][4][5].
