Overview

Rivastigmine is a small molecule cholinesterase inhibitor used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia. It works by reversibly inhibiting both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), enzymes responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. By increasing acetylcholine levels, it enhances cholinergic neurotransmission and can improve cognitive function and daily living activities in affected patients. Rivastigmine is available as oral capsules, oral solution, and transdermal patches. It was originally developed by Novartis[4][6][10].
