Rivina humilis is a small tropical/subtropical plant species whose berries and other parts contain phytochemicals such as betalains, phenolics, flavonoids, and fatty acids; extracts have been studied in vitro and in animal models for antioxidant, cytotoxic, and hypoglycemic effects, but it is not an approved pharmaceutical drug. Berries accumulate betalain pigments and have been explored as natural colorants and in food applications. Preclinical studies report antioxidant activity of fruit and leaf extracts, cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, and antidiabetic effects in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats; mechanisms are generally attributed to antioxidant and phytochemical effects rather than a defined single molecular target.
