Rizatriptan is a second-generation triptan and a selective serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptor agonist used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura. It works by causing vasoconstriction of intracranial extracerebral blood vessels and inhibiting nociceptive neurotransmission in trigeminal pain pathways. This action reduces the release of vasoactive neuropeptides that contribute to migraine symptoms such as pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound.
