Rizolipase is a fungal-derived lipase obtained from the mold *Rhizopus oryzae*, used as a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). It is particularly indicated for malabsorption associated with post-gastrectomy syndrome and chronic pancreatitis. Developed in collaboration with researchers at the University of Leipzig, rizolipase is distinguished from porcine-derived pancreatin by its inherent acid stability, remaining active across a broad pH range (3.0 to 9.0). This stability allows the enzyme to function effectively in the stomach and proximal small intestine without the requirement for enteric coating, making it highly suitable for patients with altered gastric anatomy or rapid gastric emptying where traditional enteric-coated microspheres may fail to synchronize with the chyme. Rizolipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of dietary triglycerides into absorbable fatty acids and monoglycerides, thereby improving fat digestion and nutritional status.
