Overview

RJV001 is a mutant recombinant collagenase derived from *Clostridium histolyticum*, engineered by replacing one amino acid near its enzymatic activity center to create a novel collagen-degrading enzyme with reduced activity and increased stability. It is being developed as an injectable biologic for the local removal of undesired subcutaneous fat tissue, offering a minimally invasive alternative to surgical liposuction. Unlike agents such as deoxycholic acid (Kybella), which destroy adipocytes via necrosis and can cause inflammation, RJV001 digests collagen fibers in the extracellular matrix (ECM), releasing adipocytes that subsequently undergo apoptosis and are cleared by the immune system. This mechanism aims to reduce adverse effects and improve safety. Preclinical studies have shown efficacy in animal models, with clinical development focused on improving submental fat (double chin) appearance and other localized fat reduction indications[1][4][5].
