Overview

RKY5016 (also known as RLY5016) is an orally administered, non-absorbed, high-capacity cation-binding polymer being developed to treat hyperkalemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or chronic heart failure who are receiving renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibitors and are at risk for elevated serum potassium levels.[1][4] By binding potassium in the gastrointestinal tract and preventing its absorption, RKY5016 lowers serum potassium concentrations and reduces the incidence of hyperkalemia, thereby enabling continued or intensified use of therapies such as spironolactone in heart failure.[1][2] The polymer acts locally in the gut, with gastrointestinal events as the main adverse effects, and has undergone Phase 2 clinical development led by Relypsa.
