Overview

RL-1 refers to two primary therapeutic entities: a novel human-derived bio-artificial liver (BAL) system and a specific rhamnolipid biosurfactant. The RL-1 bio-artificial liver is an extracorporeal support system designed to treat Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). This therapeutic system utilizes human-derived hepatocytes or a specific liver cell line (RL-1) within a bioreactor to perform essential metabolic, detoxification, and biosynthetic functions—such as ammonia clearance and protein synthesis—intended to support the patient as a bridge to liver transplantation or spontaneous regeneration. Separately, rhamnolipid-1 (RL-1) is a glycolipid biosurfactant produced by bacteria such as *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and *Pseudomonas sp.* ICTB-745. In preclinical research, RL-1 has demonstrated potent cytotoxic activity against various human cancer cell lines (including HL-60, HeLa, and HepG2) by inducing apoptosis and disrupting cell membranes, as well as exhibiting broad-spectrum antimicrobial and insecticidal properties.
