Overview

RLIP antibodies are therapeutic agents designed to target and inhibit Ral-binding protein 1 (RLIP76, also known as RALBP1), a multi-functional stress-protective protein. RLIP76 functions as a non-ABC transporter of glutathione-electrophile conjugates and plays a critical role in clathrin-dependent endocytosis and Ras-linked signaling pathways. It is frequently overexpressed in a broad spectrum of neoplasia, including melanoma, where it acts as an essential anti-apoptotic mechanism for cancer cell survival. Inhibition of RLIP76 by specific antibodies has been shown to trigger apoptosis and suppress tumor initiation and progression. Research conducted at the City of Hope National Medical Center has demonstrated that these antibodies can completely suppress chemical carcinogenesis in mouse models of melanoma and melanocytic nevi, suggesting that RLIP is a fundamental requirement for the existence of certain cancer cells.
