RLS-01 is an investigational senolytic small molecule developed by Rubedo Life Sciences, designed to selectively target and eliminate senescent cells in the context of chronic age-related diseases, particularly idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Developed using the proprietary Alembic™ drug discovery platform, RLS-01 functions as a selective prodrug that remains inactive until it is cleaved by enzymes such as senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-β-gal), which are highly overexpressed in senescent cells. Upon activation, the drug induces apoptosis specifically in these "zombie cells," which are known to drive tissue fibrosis and chronic inflammation through the secretion of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). By clearing senescent cells from the lungs, RLS-01 aims to halt the progression of fibrosis and improve respiratory function. Preclinical data has demonstrated its efficacy in reducing lung collagen levels and inflammatory markers in animal models of pulmonary disease.
