Overview

Roemerine is a natural aporphine alkaloid primarily isolated from the leaves of *Nelumbo nucifera* (Sacred Lotus) and other plants. It is extensively researched for its potent antineoplastic and antimicrobial properties. In the context of oncology, roemerine has demonstrated significant anti-prostate cancer effects by inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in various cell lines, including DU145, LNCaP, and PC-3, as well as reducing tumor growth in mouse models. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and potential DNA intercalation. Additionally, roemerine acts as an antimicrobial agent by functioning as an efflux pump inhibitor, which can help reverse multidrug resistance in pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus*.
