Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Romulus phage (also known as *Staphylococcus virus Romulus* or vB_SauM_Romulus) is a lytic bacteriophage belonging to the family *Herelleviridae* (formerly *Myoviridae*) and the genus *Silviavirus*. Originally isolated from hospital sewage in Belgium by researchers at KU Leuven, Romulus phage specifically targets *Staphylococcus aureus*, including methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* (MRSA), daptomycin non-susceptible MRSA (DNS-MRSA), and vancomycin-intermediate *S. aureus* (VISA). It is being investigated for phage therapy, particularly in combination with other phages (such as Intesti13 and Sb-1) and standard-of-care antibiotics (like daptomycin and ceftaroline) to treat biofilm-mediated and multidrug-resistant *S. aureus* infections, such as prosthetic joint infections (PJI) and bovine mastitis. Additionally, a pre-adapted variant of Romulus phage (Prima HS) has been utilized under a magistral framework in Belgium to treat *S. aureus* colonization in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
