Ronnel is an organophosphate compound used primarily as an insecticide and veterinary ectoparasiticide. It is a white to light-tan crystalline solid with the chemical formula C8H8Cl3O3PS. Ronnel acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor, exerting its toxic effects by irreversibly inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, leading to accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses and neuromuscular junctions. This results in overstimulation of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors, causing symptoms such as muscle fasciculations, convulsions, hypersecretions, and potentially death due to respiratory failure. It has been used for growth-promoting properties in animals but is primarily recognized for its biocidal activity against insects[1][2][4][5][7]. The compound degrades readily in the environment by hydrolysis and oxidation.
