Overview

ropivacaine + tetracaine is a local anesthetic combination being evaluated by the Chinese PLA General Hospital for the management of acute postoperative pain, specifically pain associated with thoracic drainage tubes following video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). The combination consists of ropivacaine hydrochloride, a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic, and tetracaine hydrochloride, a potent ester-type local anesthetic. Both agents function by binding to and inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels on the neuronal membrane, which prevents the generation and conduction of nerve impulses. In this clinical application, the solution is administered via a single intrapleural instillation (spray) to provide regional analgesia by blocking sensory perception in the pleural space.
