Ropivacaine + tramadol is a combination analgesic therapy being investigated by Aga Khan University for the management of postoperative pain, specifically following Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide-type local anesthetic that works by blocking sodium channels, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction. Tramadol is a centrally acting synthetic opioid analgesic with a dual mechanism of action: it acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist and also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. In this specific application, the combination is administered via subcutaneous wound infiltration to provide localized pain relief and reduce the need for systemic opioids. The combination aims to leverage the synergistic effects of local anesthesia and centrally acting analgesia to improve postoperative recovery.
