Overview

Rosciverine is a synthetic small molecule antispasmodic agent primarily used for the symptomatic relief of smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal, biliary, and urinary tracts. It features a dual mechanism of action, combining competitive antagonism of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (anticholinergic effect) with a direct, papaverine-like musculotropic effect on smooth muscle cells. This dual action allows for effective relaxation of visceral smooth muscle with potentially fewer side effects than pure anticholinergics. Originally developed by Crinos, it has been marketed in several European countries (notably Italy under the brand name Roscal) and has undergone clinical evaluation in China by Sanofi for indications including biliary and gastrointestinal colic.
