Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rose Bengal PDAT (photodynamic antimicrobial therapy) is an investigational, non-invasive drug-device combination therapy being developed by VisiRose (a spinout of Provectus Biopharmaceuticals and the University of Miami) for the treatment of severe, progressive infectious keratitis (including bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections) and other ocular infections like infectious scleritis. The therapy combines PV-305, a topical ophthalmic formulation of pharmaceutical-grade rose bengal sodium (a synthetic small molecule photosensitizer), with a custom-made green light-emitting diode (LED) medical device. Upon green light activation, rose bengal generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily singlet oxygen, which induces oxidative damage to microbial cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, leading to rapid pathogen death without promoting antimicrobial resistance. Rose Bengal PDAT is currently in Phase 3 clinical development.
