Overview

Roseburia hominis is a flagellated, Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Lachnospiraceae family within the Firmicutes phylum. It is a commensal organism that inhabits the human colon and is recognized for its ability to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly butyrate. Butyrate serves as an essential energy source for colonocytes, supports gut barrier function, modulates immune responses (notably by expanding regulatory T cells), and helps maintain intestinal homeostasis. Decreased levels of R. hominis have been observed in patients with ulcerative colitis and obesity, suggesting its role in maintaining gut health and metabolic balance. Experimental studies indicate that R. hominis can protect against colitis in animal models by enhancing gut barrier integrity and promoting anti-inflammatory immune pathways—potentially via TLR5-flagellin signaling[1][2][3][4][7].
