Roseoflavin is a naturally occurring riboflavin (vitamin B2) analogue and antimetabolite with potent antimicrobial and antiplasmodial properties. Originally isolated from *Streptomyces davaonensis*, it acts as a competitive inhibitor of riboflavin utilization. Its mechanism of action involves targeting FMN riboswitches to regulate bacterial gene expression and inhibiting flavokinases, thereby disrupting the synthesis of essential flavin cofactors like FMN and FAD. In laboratory research, roseoflavin is widely utilized as a selective agent to isolate riboflavin-overproducing microbial mutants for food biofortification. Recent studies have also identified its potential in oncology, where it sensitizes cancer cells to ferroptosis by impairing the function of ferroptosis suppressor protein 1 (FSP1).
