Overview
Rosiglitazone is an oral antidiabetic drug in the thiazolidinedione class used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works as a selective agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin and thereby improving glycemic control. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise for managing blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Rosiglitazone does not have activity at PPARα receptors and may also exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating nuclear factor kappa-B (NFκB) pathways. The drug was developed and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline under several brand names including Avandia (monotherapy), Avandamet (in combination with metformin), and Avandaryl (in combination with glimepiride)[1][3][4][5].
