Overview

The Ross River virus vaccine is designed to induce an immune response against Ross River virus, which causes epidemic polyarthritis in humans. Aluminum hydroxide acts as an adjuvant by binding antigens, creating aggregates that enhance uptake by antigen-presenting cells, and stimulating the release of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β via NOD-like receptor NALP3 activation[1][2][4]. It primarily elicits a Th2-biased antibody response with limited stimulation of cytotoxic T-cell (Th1) immunity[1][2]. Adjuvanting with aluminum hydroxide is a standard formulation strategy for recombinant protein and VLP-based vaccines to increase immunogenicity and reduce antigen/dose requirements[1][4].
