Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rosuvastatin + metformin XR is a fixed-dose combination (FDC) tablet developed by Althera Life Sciences for the simultaneous management of type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. The product combines immediate-release rosuvastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR) inhibitor that lowers LDL cholesterol and reduces cardiovascular risk, with an extended-release (XR) formulation of metformin. Metformin improves glycemic control by decreasing hepatic glucose production and increasing insulin sensitivity, a process mediated in part by the indirect activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This once-daily oral therapy is designed to simplify complex treatment regimens for patients with comorbid metabolic and lipid disorders, potentially improving medication adherence and overall cardiovascular outcomes.
