Rotacaps

Rotacaps are a specialized dry powder inhalation (DPI) formulation consisting of medication-filled capsules designed for use with a dry powder inhaler, such as the Rotahaler. Developed originally by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and widely produced by manufacturers like Cipla, Rotacaps provide a pre-metered dose of respiratory medication. The active ingredients within Rotacaps vary depending on the specific product; common versions include bronchodilators like salbutamol (e.g., Ventolin or Asthalin Rotacaps) for rapid relief of bronchospasm, and inhaled corticosteroids like beclometasone (e.g., Beclate Rotacaps) for long-term inflammation control in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The mechanism involves the mechanical opening or piercing of the capsule within the device, allowing the patient to inhale the dry powder—often mixed with a lactose carrier—directly into the bronchial tree.
