Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rotavirus vaccine is a live attenuated oral vaccine used to prevent infections caused by rotavirus, the leading cause of severe diarrhea and dehydration in infants and young children. The vaccines work by stimulating an immune response against the virus without causing disease. There are two main brands currently in use globally—Rotarix (monovalent) and RotaTeq (pentavalent)—both administered orally in a series of 2 or 3 doses depending on the product. These vaccines significantly reduce hospitalizations and deaths due to severe gastroenteritis caused by multiple strains of rotavirus. The World Health Organization recommends their inclusion in all national immunization programs[1][2][3][4][5].
