Overview

Rotarix is a monovalent, live, attenuated human rotavirus vaccine developed by GSK Biologicals. It is derived from the human 89-12 strain (G1P[8] genotype) and is propagated on Vero cells. The vaccine is administered orally as a two-dose regimen to infants, typically starting at 6 weeks of age, to prevent gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus. It functions by inducing active immunity through replication in the small intestine, providing protection against the most prevalent rotavirus serotypes, including G1, G3, G4, and G9. Rotarix was first approved by the FDA in April 2008 and has demonstrated high efficacy in preventing severe rotavirus-related illness in clinical trials.
