Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rotigotine is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist formulated as a once-daily transdermal patch for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Restless Legs Syndrome. Developed by UCB Pharma (following the acquisition of Schwarz Pharma), it acts as a potent agonist at D1, D2, and D3 dopamine receptors, as well as various serotonin and adrenergic receptors. The transdermal delivery system provides continuous drug release over 24 hours, which helps maintain stable plasma concentrations and may reduce motor fluctuations compared to intermittent oral dosing. It is particularly noted for its efficacy in managing early morning motor impairment and sleep disturbances in patients with early-stage and advanced idiopathic Parkinson's disease.
