Overview

Roucongrong is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the dried fleshy stems of the parasitic herbaceous plants *Cistanche deserticola* Y.C. Ma or *Cistanche tubulosa* (Schenk) Wight. Known as the "Ginseng of the desert," it has been used for nearly 2,000 years in Chinese medicine to tonify kidney yang, replenish essence and blood, and moisten the large intestine to relieve constipation. Modern pharmacological research has identified phenylethanoid glycosides, such as echinacoside and acteoside, as its primary bioactive constituents. These compounds are being investigated for their neuroprotective effects in Parkinson's disease—potentially through the modulation of the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway—as well as for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-osteoporotic properties. It is listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and is commonly administered as a decoction or as part of multi-herb formulas like the Roucongrong Pill (RCRP).
