Roxarsone

Roxarsone is an organoarsenic small molecule formerly used as a feed additive in poultry and swine to promote weight gain, improve feed efficiency, enhance pigmentation, and prevent coccidiosis by acting as a coccidiostat[1][5][7]. Its mechanism of action involves antibacterial activity and inhibition of protozoan parasites such as *Eimeria* species (coccidia)[2][5]. Roxarsone has also been shown to promote angiogenesis and glycolysis in animal models via induction of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), which may contribute to tumor growth[6]. The drug was marketed under the brand name 3-Nitro. Use of roxarsone has been discontinued or banned in many countries due to concerns about its metabolism into inorganic arsenic—a known toxin—in edible tissues[3][4][5].
