Royal jelly is a complex honey bee secretion produced by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of worker bees, primarily used for the nutrition of larvae and queen bees. It is composed of water, proteins (notably Major Royal Jelly Proteins or MRJPs), sugars, lipids (such as 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid), vitamins, and minerals. In clinical research, royal jelly is investigated for its potent anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant properties. It has been shown to modulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17, and growth factors such as TGF-β and M-CSF. In oncology, royal jelly is studied as a complementary therapy to reduce adverse effects of chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapies, such as fatigue and anorexia, and for its potential direct anti-tumor effects mediated through the inhibition of STAT3 signaling and VEGF-induced angiogenesis.
