RSV-B preF protein (JNJ-78991172) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine antigen developed by Janssen Vaccines & Prevention B.V. (a Johnson & Johnson company). It consists of a prefusion conformation-stabilized fusion (F) protein derived from the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) B subtype. The F protein is a critical target for neutralizing antibodies, and stabilizing it in its prefusion state is intended to elicit a more potent and protective immune response compared to postfusion forms. This antigen is being investigated as a component of next-generation multivalent RSV vaccine candidates, often evaluated in combination with adenovirus-vectored components (such as Ad26.RSV.preF) or RSV A subtype antigens. Clinical development has focused on preventing RSV-mediated lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) in older adults, with Phase 1/2a trials (e.g., NCT05327816) assessing its safety and immunogenicity.
