Overview

RSV Memphis 37b (also referred to as RSV-A Memphis 37b) is a well-characterized wild-type respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) subtype A strain. It is primarily utilized as a challenge virus in controlled human infection (challenge) studies, where healthy adult volunteers are intranasally inoculated to deliberately induce a predictable, mild-to-moderate RSV infection. This model serves as a critical research tool for evaluating the clinical efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of investigational RSV therapeutics, including antivirals such as EDP-938, EDP-323, and molnupiravir, as well as various vaccine candidates. The strain is selected for its ability to reliably generate safe and reproducible infections in a clinical setting, allowing researchers to assess how interventions affect viral load and clinical symptoms.
