The RSV prefusion F protein-based vaccine is a recombinant subunit or mRNA-based vaccine designed to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. It uses the stabilized prefusion form of the viral fusion (F) glycoprotein as its antigen. The prefusion conformation of the F protein is highly immunogenic and elicits potent neutralizing antibodies that block viral entry into host cells. This approach addresses previous safety concerns associated with postfusion forms and has demonstrated high efficacy in preventing lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by RSV in various populations, including older adults, pregnant individuals for maternal immunization to protect infants, and high-risk adults under 60 years old. The main developer and manufacturer is Pfizer; Moderna has also developed an mRNA version using a similar antigenic target[1][3][4][5][6].
