RTx-021 is a next-generation visual optogenetic gene therapy developed by Ray Therapeutics for the treatment of degenerative retinal diseases, specifically geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and Stargardt disease. The therapy uses adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene delivery to introduce a light-sensing channel rhodopsin protein into retinal cells, aiming to restore vision by making these cells responsive to light. This approach leverages optogenetics—a technology that enables control of cell activity using light—without requiring supplementary eyewear or external devices.
