RU-101

RU-101 is a recombinant human serum albumin (rHSA) ophthalmic solution developed for the treatment of severe dry eye syndrome. Human serum albumin is a naturally occurring protein in human tears that plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the ocular surface by providing cytoprotective effects and promoting wound healing. In patients with severe dry eye, the concentration of albumin in the tear film is often significantly reduced, leading to increased ocular surface damage and inflammation. RU-101 acts by supplementing these levels, thereby promoting the repair of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium, stabilizing the tear film, and potentially exerting anti-inflammatory properties. The drug was originally developed by R-Tech Ueno, which was later acquired by Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, and subsequently by Mallinckrodt.
