Overview

PSK 3841 (also known as RU58841 or HMR-3841) is a topically active, non-steroidal antiandrogen (NSAA) that acts as a competitive antagonist of the androgen receptor. Originally developed by Roussel Uclaf and later acquired by ProStrakan, the compound was investigated for the treatment of androgen-dependent conditions, primarily androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), as well as acne and hirsutism. Its mechanism involves binding to androgen receptors within hair follicles, thereby blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from inducing follicle miniaturization. PSK 3841 was designed for local action to avoid the systemic side effects typically associated with oral antiandrogens. Although it reached Phase II clinical trials, where it demonstrated potential efficacy, further development was discontinued, and the drug never received regulatory approval.
