While primarily studied in the context of non-receptor protein tyrosine kinase signaling, computational drug screening studies in 2020 also identified RU85053 as a potential inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRp). It has been proposed as a component of a therapeutic cocktail for COVID-19 alongside baloxavir marboxil and natamycin. Currently, the compound remains in the experimental stage with no specific commercial developer or clinical trial data publicly available.
