Rubidium-82 generators are accelerator-produced radionuclide generator systems that contain strontium-82 adsorbed on a solid column (typically hydrous stannic oxide) and are eluted with additive-free 0.9% sodium chloride to produce sterile rubidium Rb-82 chloride injection for intravenous use.[7][10][4] The parent strontium-82 decays to the short‑lived positron-emitting daughter rubidium-82 (half-life ~75 seconds), which behaves as a potassium analog, is rapidly taken up by viable myocardium via Na+/K+ ATPase–dependent ion exchange, and enables positron emission tomography (PET) myocardial perfusion imaging under rest or pharmacologic stress in adults with suspected or established coronary artery disease.[7][5][4] These generators are used as in‑house sources of Rb‑82 for cardiac PET, provide repeated elutions over a service life of roughly 4–6 weeks depending on initial Sr‑82 loading, and require dedicated infusion/elution systems and strict quality control to limit strontium-82/strontium-85 breakthrough and avoid excessive radiation exposure.[7][4][3]
