Rumex acetosa (RA1) is a proanthocyanidin-enriched herbal extract derived from the aerial parts of *Rumex acetosa L.* (common sorrel). It is formulated as a mouthrinse for the prophylaxis and treatment of chronic periodontitis. The extract contains a defined mixture of flavan-3-ols, oligomeric proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids, with Epicatechin-3-O-(4β→8)-Epicatechin-3-O-Gallate (Procyanidin-B2-Di-Gallate) identified as a key bioactive lead. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of adhesins and gingipains (cysteine proteases) produced by *Porphyromonas gingivalis*, a major periodontal pathogen. By suppressing bacterial adhesion to oral epithelial cells and inhibiting gingipain activity, the extract reduces intraoral colonization. The development is led by Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf.
