Overview

Rumex salicifolius var. mexicanus pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Mexican dock plant. It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic tool in in vivo allergy testing, such as skin prick tests or intradermal tests, to identify hypersensitivity to this specific weed pollen. The extract contains various proteins and glycoproteins that act as allergens; when introduced to the skin of a sensitized individual, these allergens cross-link specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the degranulation of these cells and the subsequent release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. It was approved by the FDA in 1974 under BLA 102223 and is also used in subcutaneous immunotherapy (allergy shots) to induce immunological tolerance.
