Runcaciguat is an orally available small molecule drug that acts as a soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) activator. It selectively binds to the oxidized and heme-free form of sGC, which is unresponsive to nitric oxide (NO), restoring cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) production under conditions of oxidative stress. This mechanism leads to vasodilation and blood pressure reduction, providing renoprotective effects in preclinical models of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Runcaciguat has been developed by Bayer and is being investigated for the treatment of chronic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, and renal failure. Clinical studies have shown efficacy in reducing albuminuria in patients with CKD, particularly those with type 2 diabetes[1][5][6][7][8].
