Overview

Ruppia maritima extract is an aqueous preparation derived from the shoots of the submerged aquatic plant *Ruppia maritima*, commonly known as Widgeon Grass. This extract is characterized by a rich composition of secondary metabolites, including phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and steroids. In preclinical in vitro studies, the extract has demonstrated potent antioxidant, antiparasitic, antibacterial, and antineoplastic activities. Its anticancer mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis through the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol, and the promotion of DNA damage and nuclear condensation. Additionally, it exhibits antibacterial properties by increasing plasma membrane permeability and causing bacterial DNA destruction, and it effectively inhibits the formation of bacterial biofilms.
