Overview

RuRe1 is a heteronuclear ruthenium(II)-rhenium(I) complex, specifically [Ru(bpy)2(tpphz)Re(CO)3Cl](PF6)2, where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and tpphz is a tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c:3″,2″-h:2″',3″'-j]phenazine bridging ligand. It is designed as a photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent for cancer treatment. RuRe1 exhibits high phototoxicity against various cancer cell lines upon irradiation with blue light (450 nm). Its mechanism of action involves inducing tumor cell apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway and inhibiting metastasis and angiogenesis by downregulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP-2, MMP-9) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2).
