Rutan

**Rutan** is an oral Uzbek antiviral botanical drug product comprising a polyphenolic extract from tannic sumac leaves, *Rhus coriaria*. The product is a chemically heterogeneous mixture rather than a single defined small molecule. Published work identifies sumac-derived galloylglucose and ellagitannin polyphenols among its constituents and reports antiviral activity. Rutan has been described as an endogenous interferon inducer and influenza-virus neuraminidase inhibitor; experimental and clinical COVID-19 literature additionally reports inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 3C-like protease and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. It has been developed and marketed in Uzbekistan as a tablet product for viral respiratory infections, with completed Phase 2 studies in COVID-19 and pediatric acute respiratory viral infections.
