Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rutherrin is an investigational, intravenously administered photodynamic and radiodynamic therapy formulation developed by Theralase Technologies. It consists of Ruvidar (TLD-1433), a ruthenium(II)-based small-molecule photosensitizer, complexed with recombinant human transferrin. The transferrin component acts as a targeting moiety, directing the complex to cancer cells that overexpress the transferrin receptor (TfR/CD71). Once internalized, Rutherrin can be activated by light or ionizing radiation (such as X-rays) to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to direct tumor cell destruction and the induction of immunogenic cell death (ICD). Rutherrin is currently in preclinical development for several aggressive cancers, including glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and lymphoma.
