Overview

Rutin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside found in many plants such as buckwheat, Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica), and Eucalyptus macrorhyncha. It is commonly used as an over-the-counter dietary supplement and has been studied for its potential therapeutic effects on capillary fragility, blood flow improvement, reduction of blood clots risk, arthritis pain relief, and neuroprotection. Rutin exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has shown promise in preclinical studies for conditions like Alzheimer's disease due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress and ß-amyloid oligomers. Mechanistically, it acts primarily as an antioxidant scavenging free radicals; it also modulates various cellular transporters involved in renal function and inhibits inflammatory pathways such as the NOD-like receptor three inflammasome[1][3][5].
