Overview

rV-GM-CSF is an oncolytic viral immunotherapy consisting of a recombinant vaccinia virus engineered to express human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Developed by researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University, it is designed for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. The virus selectively infects and lyses tumor cells while simultaneously delivering the GM-CSF gene directly into the tumor microenvironment. This local expression of GM-CSF stimulates the recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells, thereby inducing a systemic anti-tumor immune response. In clinical trials, it has been administered via intralesional injection to treat cutaneous melanoma metastases, demonstrating safety and the ability to induce tumor regression.
