RV3-BB rotavirus vaccine is a live-attenuated, oral human neonatal rotavirus vaccine developed by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) in collaboration with The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne and the University of Melbourne. It is based on the naturally attenuated human neonatal rotavirus strain RV3 (G3P[6]), which was originally isolated from healthy, asymptomatic newborns. Unlike standard rotavirus vaccines that are administered starting at six to eight weeks of age, RV3-BB is designed to be given as a birth dose (within the first five days of life) to provide early protection before exposure to environmental pathogens and to overcome barriers like maternal antibodies and gut microbiome interference. The vaccine has demonstrated high efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity in clinical trials in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Malawi, and is licensed to PT Bio Farma for manufacturing and introduction into national immunization programs.
